Portrait XO (she/they) is a transdisciplinary artist, musician, independent researcher, and data activist.&#38;nbsp; Recipient of jazzki award by ELBJAZZ (June 2023), the first German human-AI jazz prize, she’s been recognized over the years for her work in sonic innovation with AI audio pioneers Dadabots.&#38;nbsp; They won ‘Best Experiment’ award at VUT Indie Awards 2021, and Eurovision AI Song Contest Jury Vote for ‘most creative use of AI’ in 2020.&#38;nbsp; Her development into AI audiovisual art evolved through several artist residencies from NEW NOW FESTIVAL and BBA Gallery in 2022, and Factory Berlin x Sonar+D in 2020.&#38;nbsp; She researches computational creativity, human-machine collaboration, and explores new formats &#38;amp; applications for forward-thinking art and sound.&#38;nbsp; To expand the community of sound artists and creative technologists, she founded SOUND OBSESSED - sonic innovation archive, celebrating the journey and milestones of new innovation in sound.&#38;nbsp; She is also a founding member of The IASAS (International Association of Synaesthetes, Artists, and Scientists) and Refraction Festival DAO.&#38;nbsp; Her debut research-based AI audiovisual album 'WIRE' and latest work with data sonification highlights the boundaries of what’s possible with small vs big data.&#38;nbsp; The core of her works address bias in society, translate speculative opinions about AI, and critique the impact of AI on creativity, identity, ecology, and underrepresented cultures and society.&#38;nbsp; Her latest project premiered at MUTEK Montreal and Gray Area Festival, ‘The Cost of Connection’ – an audiovisual performance with sonified data from The UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals.&#38;nbsp; 

She has performed, presented, and exhibited at The UN AI for Good Summit, SXSW, Ars Electronica, MONOM, Reeperbahn Festival, International Music Summit, Amsterdam Dance Event, BBA Gallery, RE:PUBLICA, Sonar+D, Factory Berlin, Tech Open Air, Redbull Music, Future Forum by BMW Welt, KIKK Festival, Github, and more.

Inspiration
Living betwen digital and physical realities where technological engagements are fleeting and intangible, the goal was to create a&#38;nbsp; tangible and immersive way for people to engage with visualized AI generated audio and feel them in their hands.

4% of the population has synesthesia, a cross-wiring of the sense. The more we understand how we function internally, we can create a better experience for our lives externally. In 'Synthesis' we invite you to explore how sound and taste can be associated with the colors and textures around you. Maybe the color blue makes one person feel sad, while calm for another. How can we explore the external world to discover our internal senses in a new way?


What it does
Synthesis is a spatial audio experience in Augmented Reality. It allows you to walk around your room in the Hololens, and gesture to "synthesize" an object, wall, floor, and more into sound interpretations of it's color and texture. Put the Hololens on, walk around and tap your environment to launch a sonic interpretation of it.

I participated in last year’s contest and since then, I’ve become even more obsessed with trying new approaches of creating art and music with AI.&#38;nbsp; For this year’s contest, I wanted to challenge myself to learn how to train my own datasets and play with parameters of existing resources.&#38;nbsp; I’ve found experimenting with different machine learning models to be inspiring due to the nature of the unpredictability of what I get.&#38;nbsp; After meeting Ramon unexpectedly during the lockdown and inspired by his amazing voice, I decided to venture into new experiments with our voices.&#38;nbsp; Since my first experiments with CJ Carr over the last couple years, I’ve become very curious about combining unique datasets to see what kind of new sounds I can create.&#38;nbsp; We allowed the music production to be led by the strange glitches and sonic textures that came out of these models.&#38;nbsp; Lyrically, we were inspired by being able to plant and grow multiple seeds simultaneously to train and give birth to all these audio experiments.&#38;nbsp; With creativity, there is always a constant push and pull between freedom and control.&#38;nbsp; We allowed the natural tension of this ebb and flow with a lot of patient listening digging for the gold nuggets of new and strange sounds we’ve never heard before.&#38;nbsp; 
Workflow
 
How did you curate and evaluate the training data (if any), algorithms, and AI outputs?

Birds on Mars - custom synthetic voice design web-based tool (https://www.krach.ai/). After Birds on Mars trained 1 hour of Portrait XO’s talking voice and provided 5 models to play with (10-50 hours of training), we input words for text to speech audio for both narration and sound design. Krach’s web-based tool that allows altering the synthetic voice to alter the output with the following parameters: pitch, speed, new language, and sing.&#38;nbsp; Recorded 20 minutes of singing (both individual recordings of Portrait XO and Ramon) Trained each set on Google Colab DDSP autoencoder https://colab.research.google.com/github/magenta/ddsp/blob/master/ddsp/colab/demos/train_autoencoder.ipynbTrained on Timbre transfer to upload small batches of audio recordings to resynthesis our voices from one to the other (Portrait XO singing directly into Colab of dataset trained on Ramon’s voice, and vice versa), and also recorded directly into Colab to produce a batch of AI generated samples to produce new music. https://colab.research.google.com/github/magenta/ddsp/blob/master/ddsp/colab/demos/timbre_transfer.ipynbTrained on Moises Horta Valenzuela’s MelSpecVAE both our vocals as 1 data set (40 hours of vocals) for one shot samples from latent space and interpolation through 2 different points in the latent space and synthesize the 'in between' sounds.&#38;nbsp; Synthesize arbitrarily long audio samples by generating seeds and sample from the latent space. Noise types for generating Z-vectors are uniform, Perlin and fractal.&#38;nbsp; https://github.com/moiseshorta/MelSpecVAE
How did you combine different approaches, and the various musical components together?

 Human-machine collaboration feels best when co-creation happens holistically between human and machine.&#38;nbsp; The human is the driver of translating experiences into cohesive ways for us to understand life.&#38;nbsp; That’s what machines cannot do.&#38;nbsp; Machines can be fun, unpredictable, and evoke emotions, but it can never tell the subjective story of a human experience.&#38;nbsp; The AI generated audio we used ended up enhancing our musical skills of composing, producing and writing.&#38;nbsp; It felt like an equal collaboration between human and machine.

You could include a flowchart to illustrate the iteration between musicians, ML specialist, producers, and the use of AI tools for different parts of the music.

How are all of these influences reflected in the final result?

Our track showcases the strange glitches and textures of these audio outputs.&#38;nbsp; While MelGAN provided a lot of chirping and heavy crunchy sounds indicating the sound of a ‘machine thinking’, DDSP/Timbre Transfer and Birds on Mars models both shared more of a grainy/soft distortion in all the outputs.&#38;nbsp; The lyrics are a direct reflection of how we felt about the process of a lot of patience, restarting notebooks that would sometimes get glitchy, and the rewarding feeling of finally finding flow when we sift through countless audio samples to piece together a palette of sounds we liked.&#38;nbsp; We looked for audio that had interesting textures for percussive elements, turned some into sampled instruments, and others we used as inspiration for melodies and storytelling.&#38;nbsp;
Creative use of AI tools for musicality

Why and how did you choose to use AI tools in achieving your musical and creative goals?

After working with CJ Carr on co-creating with AI generated audio in last year’s competition, I wanted to continue exploring how else can machine generated audio be inspiring from feeding original vocals as datasets.&#38;nbsp; The human voice is the most emotional, dynamic, interesting, and evolving instrument we can ever have and use.&#38;nbsp; Allowing the songwriting and production to support the machine generated audio was the feedback loop that became an inspiring way to co-create this glitchy, strange, and curious palette of sounds.&#38;nbsp; Purely from a sound design perspective, there are so many micro possibilities of the types of sounds we can get because the type of data we feed can be so wide, not just sound.&#38;nbsp; And this is the kind of possibility that can only be created with AI.&#38;nbsp; The random nature of AI is what becomes an instant idea generator with flows of spark for new ideas from a constant state of being surprised.&#38;nbsp; When we use our own original material as the raw data we input, it gives us a chance to become even more intimate with our work as we hear ourselves back in new unexpected ways.&#38;nbsp; Thanks to CJ Carr and Moisés Horta Valenzuela, I was taught how to use Google Colab notebooks as a great starting point of learning how to train my own datasets.

In what way did the use of AI tools support or hinder you in conveying the aesthetics, emotion, the story and the main message of your song?

 It proved to be a huge support for serving as a guide of the aesthetic for the production.&#38;nbsp; Because of the constant surprising new sounds we got to play with, it gave us a new way of working that broke us free from traditional approaches to songwriting.&#38;nbsp; Instead, it became like a game of creating a collage of sounds we felt fit well together.&#38;nbsp; The melodies and lyrics ended up as our emotions and thoughts reflecting on the process.&#38;nbsp; The only thing that was hindering was the data processing time, the glitchy colab notebooks that didn’t always work, and sifting through huge batches of audio that became repetitive and unusable.&#38;nbsp; But the samples that made it into this track really helped shape and define the overall sound of this production we’re happy about.

What surprised you about the AI tools output or interfaces? What abilities did the AI tool of your choice enable? Did you have to make tradeoffs based on tool limitations?

 The weird thing with Google Colab DDSP autoencoder was the sample rates changing unpredictably.&#38;nbsp; For some reason, when the original audio input length was different to later audio inputs, it wouldn’t set the new audio length as the new length for the output, but kept the previous uploaded file length.&#38;nbsp; This meant we got even stranger outputs with sample rates changing constantly (unless the audio in was always consistently the same exact length of time).&#38;nbsp; When we trained both our voices in MelSpecVAE, we got 1 specific one shot sample that was a ‘goosebump’ moment. It sandwiched both our vocals and created a strange harmony with a weird effect that we loved.

Did AI have an impact on the creative process? Would you have separated the elements of a song (melody, lyric, rhythm, etc) differently or approached them in a different order/direction if you were writing without AI?

Yes. We ended up breaking free from a typical song structure of full verses, choruses, middle / outro sections. We became infatuated with showing off the new exciting sounds we discovered. Although there are real live vocals that were sung on this track, we were less worried about writing a full traditional song and more interested in putting together a collection of sounds that we felt sounded great.&#38;nbsp; Taking inspiration from the short bursts of audio we could use for sampling, we took a similar approach to melodies and lyrics keeping them just as sparse.&#38;nbsp; We kept all the instrumentation around the AI generated audio minimal to highlight these sounds and a sporadic poetic approach to lyrics and melodies.&#38;nbsp; 
Collaboration

What was the most interesting to you in your collaboration process? What was the most challenging?

Two artists unexpectedly meeting during the pandemic in Berlin’s lockdown restrictions has become a real rarity.&#38;nbsp; And meeting another artist that syncs with similar stylistic interests with an amazing voice was an unexpected coincidence.&#38;nbsp; Training AI models with both of our voices and getting interesting outputs.&#38;nbsp; The most weird/interesting thing that happened was breaking Google Colab DDSP autoencoder notebook that kept changing audio output sample rates creating a new voice that sounded like Chewbacca.&#38;nbsp; Trying new approaches to try and merge our voices together was really fun to see what kind of textures we'd get. &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;

 In what ways did using AI in the songwriting process make your (remote) collaboration better? In what ways more challenging?

 It was always interesting to hear unpredictable results, that’s always the fun part.&#38;nbsp; The challenging part was when we’d hear an audio sample that sounded great and wished it went on longer.&#38;nbsp; And the small percentage of usable AI generated output.&#38;nbsp; We needed to train quite a lot of data in bursts of time to sift through a lot of noise.

How would you describe the role AI played as a "collaborator"?

Exciting once you get through the patience game.&#38;nbsp; It provides a constant spark creator, once you get your set of audio to play with, it can really help with breaking free from any form or structure to create your own, and the constant state of surprise is the best anecdote for writer’s block.&#38;nbsp; 
Diversity and ethical considerations


How did you approach forming a diverse team and helping each team member contribute their best in the process? Ramon has an amazing voice with a great melodic and lyrical style.&#38;nbsp; For the creation of this song, Portrait XO focused more on the curation of data to feed into models, trained the models with various different parameter changes, and sound hunted sifting through all the noise of the AI generated audio to download sounds that were interesting enough to use.&#38;nbsp; Setting the tone with a new palette of sounds to start with, Ramon took lead in creating melodies, and together we fine tuned a short set of lyrics to translate our emotions with simple and soulful production. The lyrics became an organic and mutually agreed way of expressing how we felt about this production.

Throughout the process, how did your team discuss the ethical issues that arise around data, models, musical output, creative agency and ownership?

 We’ve only had 1 session together to create this song so we haven’t had long enough time to venture too deeply into other topics around AI.

Dr. Joel Salinas sees numbers and hears sounds from visuals.&#38;nbsp; For this installation, he was sent a series o gifs and asked to send audio recordings of the way he heard these visuals, and explain what numbers he saw in detail e.g. ‘the 0 and 9 hug each other’.&#38;nbsp; For the event, participants were able to touch different graphics on the interactive audio poster that launched audiovisuals through a projector.

‘_______ __ _ WIRE’ in collaboration with CJ Carr (DADABOTS)  &#38;nbsp;
CJ Carr (1/2 of Dadabots) generated 10 hours of new audio based on my voice.He created this by training 1 hour of my singing voice over 2 1/2 days with a custom SampleRNN AI model.
This is a concept album exploring how inspiration can happen from writing with ‘another self’.&#38;nbsp; What started as a scientific experiment turned into a very personal and the most intimate reflection of what human-machine collaboration looks, sounds, and feels like.This album is a 50/50 collaborative co-created album between me + AI. &#38;nbsp;The process I fell in love with throughout this album creation gave birth to a method we call ‘neural vocal duet’: abstracting lyrics and melodies from the AI generated raw audio for songwriting and producing. Each song title is based on the AI generated audio that spat out words and melodies I found interesting to turn into a track. 
 Because AI proved to not be smart enough to sing full phrases of melodies and lyrics,the writing process became a game of ‘FILL IN THE BLANK’.
The blank spaces shown as underscore in the artwork of this album symbolizes the AI generated audio that inspired the title of this album and first 2 songs.&#38;nbsp; ‘SITTIN ON A’ is the AI generated audio ’_______ __ _‘WIRE’ is me filling in the blank.All songs written, recorded, and produced by Portrait XOMixed and Mastered by Michele Balduzzi
Custom AI model by Dadabots: ‘We split each audio dataset into 3,200 eight-second overlapping chunks of raw audio data (FLAC). The chunks are
randomly shuffled and split into training, testing, and validation sets. The split is 88% training, 6% testing, 6% validation. We train each model for two days on a NVIDIA V100 GPU on AWS.We use a 2-tier SampleRNN with 256 embedding size, 1024 dimensions, 5 layers, LSTM, 256 linear quantization levels, 16kHz or 32kHz sample rate, skip connections, and a 128 batch size, using weight normalization. The initial state h0 is randomized to generate more variety. Intermittently at checkpoints during training, audio clips
are generated autoregressively, one sample at a time, and converted to WAV files. About ten hours of music is generated.’

SITTIN ON A&#38;nbsp;


During the initial stage of songwriting and producing this album, I had no idea how I’d create music with all these strange glitches, words that sounded like words (but mostly not), and short clips of interesting melodies.&#38;nbsp; I started off by curating samples that made melodic sense, and wired words together I found interesting.&#38;nbsp; I questioned whether or not AI generated music could be emotive or robotic.&#38;nbsp; In the end, it was deeply emotive because hearing a machine sing like me was creepy, fascinating, and inspiring at the same time.&#38;nbsp; All of these melodies and words were new, and my approach to composing and producing was created in a way to support the AI generated vocals.&#38;nbsp; This piece starts off with a call and response between me and AI ‘other’ self followed by AI generated audio curated with production to support them.

WIRE

Neural vocal duet between human voice and AI voice.&#38;nbsp; The hook of this song ‘sittin on a’ came from one of the AI generated audio clips.&#38;nbsp; This was the first goosebump moment of my journey collaborating in this way, curious to discover new melodies and lyrics that would inspire new ideas.&#38;nbsp; This specific hook was a strange moment because the AI voice sang in a way that sounds like my human voice, but combined different techniques in a way I cannot replicate in real life.&#38;nbsp; But I still loved the hook, and it became a game of ‘fill in the blank’ finishing phrases and sometimes words that sound like words, but not quite.&#38;nbsp; The act of curating and wiring words and melodies together helped me finish this phrase into, ‘sittin’ on a wire’.&#38;nbsp; This entire journey has opened me up to becoming more interested in allowing a new process to define what I do rather than the other way around.&#38;nbsp; I think creatively it’s been far more interesting, explorative, and expansive to try new approaches without knowing what the end result will be.&#38;nbsp; By allowing a new process to unfold new meanings and allowed these new meanings to define what the new creations are – to be inspired by something I never imagined before trying.&#38;nbsp; This process is what defined the project as a ‘neural vocal duet’. &#38;nbsp;

JUNG
Jung in German means ‘young’ and in Korean it means ‘attachment’.&#38;nbsp; This was another goosebump moment as I heard this phrase ‘ee jung’ (this attachment) jump out at me while I was contemplating on how we become attached to memories, people, and things.&#38;nbsp; In Korean, there is no real English translation of ‘jung’ as culturally, it sometimes can be related to a form of love, but can also be purely an attachment to things and people we don’t necessarily love.&#38;nbsp; The vocals in the beginning are melodies and lyrics I sang inspired by realizing attachment can often times be mistaken for love – culturally and emotionally. &#38;nbsp;

This is a purely instrumental production with slices of AI generated audio chopped trying to make sense of nonsense while feeling the chaos of what the machine learning process felt like. &#38;nbsp;

Another chaotic expression of listening to countless hours of strange AI generated audio.&#38;nbsp; This track has longer phrases of untouched AI vocals after discovering longer tangible results from day 2 of training.&#38;nbsp; This 1st version of music video features all the artists from Factory Berlin x Sonar+D artist residency using Artbreeder to animate which is where I started my first AI visual experiments.&#38;nbsp;

LOVE IS MISLEADING

I’ve been revisiting my childhood a lot over the last several years.&#38;nbsp; Contemplating on how the concept of love changes through time.&#38;nbsp; During this time of thinking about past memories, 2 audio clips jumped out at me ‘haha’ and ‘Love is misleading’.&#38;nbsp; It’s also a song about healing from a handful of my own personal traumatic experiences when love has been misleading based on how I’ve been conditioned to think about what love actually looks and feels like from a violent upbringing.

LOVE IS MISLEADING (VERSION NOMEEE - BONUS TRACK)This track was actually created following the album’s completion and became a last minute addition:After finishing this album, I decided to try another experiment by taking the AI generated audio clip ‘love is misleading’ that inspired the song and submitted it as a text prompt to talk2transformer. I was stunned with the emotional journey I went on with it so I created a composition for the GPT-2 text + Nomeee (synthetic speech design based on my voice by @birdsonmars) to narrate which became a last minute addition to this album.I get asked often if I think AI is or will ever be sentient. I don’t think AI is sentient, but maybe it can make humans more sentient. By experiencing how machines narrate and try mirroring humans prompts us to contemplate on how we really feel about the possibilities and limitations of AI. Can AI help us understand our own feelings better by provoking new emotions from this mirroring, self-reflecting, and contemplations of what human-machine collaboration means and looks like?’ Humans are good at redefining words and meanings, the only way I imagine AI will be sentient is through humans redefining what sentient means.

PLASTIC SKIN


Written in the perspective of an AI robot singing to its human creator.&#38;nbsp; The human creates the robot to fulfill all its desires and needs of emotional and intellectual connection.&#38;nbsp; The chorus resolves to ‘Is it the greed?&#38;nbsp; I wish I knew how to love you but you take it with no consent and I don’t know how to contend, I’m just plastic skin’.&#38;nbsp; The robot basically points out that based on the data analysis of the erratic and unpredictable demands of human emotional needs, love proves to be inconclusive.

VESSEL (BONUS TRACK)
This is a song co-created between me and Rezar in collaboration with open source AI models for audio training. Using both of their vocals as a dataset, the recordings were trained on 2 AI models to create separate instruments and also train both vocals together. Portrait XO’s approach to attempt morphing 2 voices into each other through different methods for this song was praised by Imogen Heap during the AI Song Contest 2021. This song was written and recorded in 2 weeks, and this is a remastered version of the song.
